The restoration of the historic gates at the entrance of University College involved several protective surface coatings. The first step was to use glass bead blasting to remove the thick paint coating on the surface of the gates without damaging or removing any metal. The surface was than galvanised and painted with a special vinyl wash to improve the adhesion of final coats of paint. The next coating was an commercial epoxy paint and then a U.V. clear coating was applied for protection. All moving parts were replaced with stainless steel for additional protection from corrosion. The gate was installed without affecting the stone work.
