This staircase and railing is located in a in downtown Toronto that needed to expanded.
The concrete pad of the third floor was cut open to allow for a new staircase and reinforcement steel was added along the trusses supporting the second floor concrete pad.
With floor space is at a premium, the staircase and railing needed to fit in as small a space as possible. Using 10" channel as stringers for the staircase allowed for maximum strength in a minimum sized structural component. To cap the peripheral, the opening was clad in 1/4" thick steel strips, the top being 1/4" by 2" and the sides 1/4" by 6". The treads that span across the staircase are supported with two steel angle iron supports for a plywood core inset in the angle iron. The treads are wrapped with high volume office carpet for sound reduction and comfort. The railings were designed to evoke the feeling of ships railings. |
